If you venture online, you’re bound to encounter a pale-haired “influencer” casually answering basic questions about some pricey, exotic pet. While they parade their animals for attention, they often preach that these creatures need extensive care and shouldn’t be kept for selfish reasons—a bit of hypocrisy in action.
Squirrel monkeys exemplify how animal rights can fail in practice. Despite being highly intelligent, many of these animals end up spending their lives in unnatural conditions, such as wearing diapers in a small, odor-filled apartment in Michigan.
1. They Have Grasping Tails
While cartoons often depict monkeys with a fully functional fifth limb in the form of a tail, this isn’t universally accurate. Only certain New World monkeys, like spider monkeys, can hang by their tails. Squirrel monkeys use their tails skillfully, though not for hanging—they brace against branches and occasionally hold objects, aiding them as they navigate the forest canopy.
2. Origins Remain a Mystery
Fossil and genetic evidence gives little clarity on how squirrel monkeys arrived in Central America. The five species we know today diverged roughly 1.5 million years ago in South America, long after humans had colonized the continent. It’s possible that humans transported these monkeys to islands and archipelagos across Central America.
3. Their Palms Sweat
Squirrel monkeys have sweat glands only on their hands and feet, which is unusual among mammals. This adaptation helps them regulate body temperature in their hot, humid habitats. Unlike humans, most mammals lack widespread sweat glands, relying instead on bare patches of skin or other cooling strategies.
4. They Cool Off with Urine
When sweating alone isn’t enough, squirrel monkeys engage in a behavior that’s unusual to humans today: they urinate on their hands and feet and spread it around. This enhances evaporative cooling, helping them manage heat—though it’s certainly not a practice that wins friends in human society.
5. Evaporation Has Limits
These monkeys inhabit extremely humid rainforests. When humidity surpasses 95%, evaporative cooling becomes ineffective, whether from sweat or urine. During the wet season, their water consumption drops, suggesting they switch to alternative cooling strategies when evaporation fails.
6. They Have Pseudo-Penises
Female squirrel monkeys possess enlarged clitorises that resemble penises and use them to assert social dominance within the group. These pseudo-penises are erectile, and their size is hormonally regulated, as confirmed in laboratory studies involving ovary-removed monkeys.
7. Frequently Used in Labs
Historically, squirrel monkeys have been common laboratory subjects due to their small size and manageability. In the U.S., they remain the most used Neotropical primates in research. While some studies aim to advance medicine, much animal testing is unnecessary and ethically questionable.
8. Ethical Concerns Persist
Even under the best circumstances, using animals in research raises serious ethical questions. Strict regulations are the bare minimum, yet oversight is often lacking. High-profile cases, such as the death of nicotine-addicted squirrel monkeys in U.S. labs, reveal recurring deficiencies in care. Many animals endure immense suffering due to poorly enforced protections, highlighting systemic problems in laboratory practices.
